Fear or Trust?

As some of you may know and others may not, I started a business 2 years ago.  I stepped out in faith completely trusting God and turning to Him for everything in getting the business up and running.  Recently I was faced with a situation. I was afraid of doing something for the business that needed done and it was no small thing. I was afraid.  I repeated the thought in my head and out loud in conversation when talking about the situation.  “I’m afraid”  And it paralyzed me.  I couldn’t do anything.  I was afraid of letting go of control, so I did nothing.  I was afraid of handing over responsibilities, so I did nothing. I was afraid of what “might” happen in the future, so I did nothing.  As a result, I wasn’t moving forward, I was stuck.  Fear was winning and where there is fear there is no faith.  And then I heard a sermon about fear and trust and I got a spiritual smack upside the head…..if you are fearing, you are not trusting.

Fear by definition is to be afraid or apprehensive; having anxious concern  Synonyms for fear are: bother, worry, fret, stress, and trouble
Can anyone relate to some of those words?  I know I could.

The Definition of trust is assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something
Synonyms for trust are: confidence, credence, faith, and stock
Those are words I want to believe in.

  • Fear paralyzes you  ~  Trust frees you
  • Fear is you are in control (illusion)  ~  Trust is letting God have control
  • Fear is weakness  ~  Trust is strength
  • Fear is giving in to the evil one  ~  Trust is relying on God

David writes in Psalm 143:4  “I am losing all hope; I am paralyzed with fear.” But a few verses later he says “Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you.  Show me where to walk,  for I give myself to you.”

One of the more well known verses in the Bible and one that I have repeated over and over (and over and over!) since I became a Christian is Prov 3:5-6. I have this on a plaque in my living room, front and center, so that it is a constant reminder to me.  Proverbs 3:5-6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your path straight.”

So basically I trust God in everything, give up control and He will give me all I need…..sounds pretty simple right?? I had put my trust in the Lord to guide and direct my business from the beginning.  Why wasn’t I able to do it now?  So I went into a concentrated time of prayer with the help of these scripture verses and God broke through my fear.

Isaiah 12:2 “I will trust in him and not be afraid.  The Lord God is my strength and my song; he has given me victory.”

Isaiah 40:31  “Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.  They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary.  They will walk and not faint.”

Jeremiah 17:7 “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.”

God’s word is true and doesn’t come back void.  We need to let go of the fear each and every day, putting our trust in the maker of the universe – He’s got it.  And I’m so thankful I realized that.  Once I let go of the fear, His plan came into place, and He brought me just what I needed.  Coincidence….nope, all in a day’s work for our mighty God! I encourage you to choose trust over fear today. Choose to release all the reasons why you can’t do something. Choose to trust in God’s unfailing love and in His purposeful activity in your life. Choose to believe in his good and perfect plan for you.
